The Jimi Hendrix Chord Experience

Besides his legacy as one of the greatest improvisers, Jimi also extended the harmonic side in modern music. The jazzy E7#9 chord is known as the Hendrix chord among guitar players. This chord has a lot of dissonance (tension), so it usually resolved into A major or minor chord. Hendrix however established the sound as the first scale degree (tonic) and changed the way we hear music forever.

This chord progression is inspired by Purple Haze and Voodoo Chile. The frequent use of dominant 7th chords illustrates Hendrix blues influence. You can create a rhythmic pattern by alternating the E7#9 chord with the open low E string.
